The Yogi Publication Society published books by several authors closely linked to the Theosophical Society, such as Edouard Schuré, Rudolf Steiner, Mabel Collins, Alfred Percy Sinnett, Elias Gewurz, Dr. H. B. Pullen-Burry, and Annie Besant. Some of the first books published by YPS were reprints of well-known Theosophical works, showing that it was a major influence on their early development.
Theosophy began in New York City in 1875, founded by Helena Petrovna Blavatsky, Henry Steel Olcott, and William Quan Judge. This spiritual and philosophical movement aimed to find the universal wisdom believed to be behind all religions, philosophies, and sciences. It drew on both Eastern and Western traditions and taught that people are on a long journey of spiritual growth, shaped by karma and reincarnation, and guided by advanced spiritual teachers known as the Mahatmas or Masters.
Theosophy taught that there were different levels of consciousness that could be developed through ethical living, meditation, study, and self-discipline. The movement encouraged comparing different religions, philosophies, and sciences and supported exploring psychic phenomena, hidden natural laws, and the deeper spiritual structure of the universe. Many of its teachings included Hermetic ideas, stressing that the same spiritual principles shape both people and the universe.
