The Journal of Magnetism held a unique, though often overlooked, role in the early New Thought movement. It ran from late 1900 to early 1902, taking over after Suggestive Therapeutics lost its second-class mailing status. While it appeared to be an independent magazine led by Lloyd Kenyon Jones and Sydney B. Flower, evidence shows it was still closely tied to Dr. Herbert A. Parkyn’s growing educational and publishing network. ARTICLE

The magazine aimed to present magnetism as a scientific force behind many things once linked to mesmerism, vital force, and psychic influence. Its articles covered topics like magnetic healing, magnetic currents, personal magnetism, and thought transference, along with practical uses of magnetic force. Ads promoted courses, magnetic devices, and inventions from the Psychic Research Company, as well as Dr. Parkyn’s patented Magnetic Healing Cup, which was described as a major discovery in magnetic therapeutics. The magazine was also a key point in William Walker Atkinson’s career. Before New Thought magazine began, Atkinson worked with Flower on The Journal of Magnetism, starting their partnership in publishing.

Even though The Journal of Magnetism lasted only a short time, its impact went far beyond its years in print. It served as a link between the scientific focus of Suggestive Therapeutics and the ideas that would shape New Thought. In January 1902, the magazine became New Thought, bringing its readers, staff, and publishing work into what would become the movement’s most important journal.
